MembershipThe Eldon
B. Mahon American Inn of Court currently has active
members divided into four classifications. Master of the
Bench, or “Masters,” include lawyers who have
demonstrated superior character, ability and competence
as trial or appellate advocates, and federal, state and
local judges. Barristers include lawyers and law
professors with from four to 15 years of experience.
Associates include lawyers with fewer than four years of
experience. Pupils are law students from local area law
schools.
Masters serve five-year terms;
Barristers serve three-year terms; Associates serve
two-year terms; while Pupils serve one-year terms.
Members are eligible for re-election to the Inn as long
as there has been at least a one-year hiatus between
their terms. Members are not permitted to change their
membership classification during their term but may be
placed in a different classification if they are
re-elected to the Inn.
In addition to the active members,
the Inn extends emeritus membership to Masters who have
completed their full term of membership in good
standing. Emeritus members may participate in the Inn’s
education and social programs at their own expense.
Selection of Members
In the spring of each year, a
membership committee solicits nominations for new
Masters, Barristers and Associates from the Inn’s active
members and from state and federal judges. The
membership committee then identifies persons who have a
demonstrated interest in developing their own
professional skills and in improving the quality of
justice and submits its recommendations to the Inn’s
Officers. The President then extends the invitations to
join the Inn. The Inn is not a Bar Association.
